Silk Art (2016.037.0596)
Butterfly wings made with metal wire and hand-painted silk.
Historical Notes: The wings are hand-painted silk and were created by artist John Carollo of Naked Eye Studios. Carollo uses water and liquid silk dye on pieces of raw silk suspended in a frame to achieve a watercolor look. When asked about his decision to make the wings, Carollo said, “To have these very familiar locations of my daily life suddenly be backdrops for inescapable worldwide news coverage of a tragedy was a surreal and unsettling experience that I still can’t quite process…That sense of vulnerability contrasted with the incredible outpouring of support from the residents of the city, the profoundly moving vigils and public recognitions, made me want to be able to leave a remembrance for the victims and the city, however small it might have been.”
