Historical Notes: Former President Barack Obama designated Stonewall as a National Monument on June 24th, 2016, days before the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision guaranteeing marriage equality in all 50 states. The Stonewall National Monument is the first official National Park Service unit dedicated to telling the story of LGBTQ Americans. The monument protects and honors the area where, on June 28, 1969, The Stonewall Uprising sparked the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement in the United States.
