Handwritten Letter (2016.037.0370)
Message handwritten on notebook paper that says, “Orlando shooting victims, I’ve restarted this letter once already, despite the fact that I’ve been writing it to you since I heard what happened. I thought I’d be able to easily translate how horribly tight my chest feels onto this paper,
but all I get is a dry throat, wet eyes, and a blank paper. I don’t know any of you individually, but I love you. If I could use that love to stop that man behind the gun and give you a chance to live healthy lives full of the happiness you deserve, I would be loving like crazy. I hope you’re finding whatever afterlife you’re residing in to be accepting and full of unending affection. I don’t care if you’re sitting next to God, Buddha, Allah, or anyone else. I do care that you tell them to please send some hope into this world. I am scared of the time I am growing up in hate is so prevelent and if someone is fueled by the love of innocent people to kill, where does it end? I have so much I could say to all of you. Once again, I don’t know you, but I will never forget you. I will be strong for you and for everyone else struggling through this. I hope I can see the day where love is accepted no matter what, skin color provides no boundaries, and gender holds little importance in terms of respect. I want a better world. / Sincerely, Alia B.”
