Handwritten Letter (2016.037.1120)
Handwritten letter on journal paper that says, “7/13/16 To you who lost your lives and to you
who lost them, I am so sorry. The world took you lightly at best. To you, your life was the one and only chance you had to be yourself and to love how you love. You did what you did, you loved who you loved and you were loved too. Maybe in small moments or in big ones, and hopefully by those who gave you life. I am so sorry that your last moments were filled with fear and confusion. And pain. I did not know any of you. This letter is not eloquent or pretty. I just wanted to tell you that you lived, and will live in people’s hearts still. You will give people strength to be themselves because you showed that strength to us. Fear and hatred and desire took you from those who loved you but love itself returns you over and over again in the form of memories held in hearts. God in heaven knows you did not deserve this. / An FTM transexual from Portland, Oregon.”
